Jill Scott was born on April 4 1972 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania to her mother Joyce Scott. The family was also dominated by her grandmother and grew up being an all-single child. Scott was a student at The Philadelphia High School for Girls and after she graduated she entered Temple University. Between two work as a teacher, she was studying secondary education. She planned on becoming a teacher of English at a secondary school. Her dream to become an English teacher at high school ended when she quit school. As a poet started performing, she was able to perform at live poetry recitals. She later teamed together with Amir Quest Thompson (of The Roots) to form an ensemble. They ended up collaborating and co-writing You Got Me. In Roots performance she came out as an artist. After that, she got collaborations including with Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. While on the Canada tour of The Broadway musical Rent the Musical, she gained valuable experiences performing. The label signed her as its first artist.
